GUEST POST

The Inspiration behind It's Complicated
by Joyce Holmes

Maggie Lapage, my female character in It’s Complicated, made her first appearance in Show No Weakness as a young co-worker of Joely Sinclair. Maggie had a knack for stirring up trouble. She called it helping people. Others might call it meddling. But she always had the best intentions. Several of my readers told me how much they loved her feisty personality, and their comments inspired me to write her story. I had a scenario in my head where she’d fit perfectly and, from there, the story quickly came together.

The storyline formed easily, but accurately portraying Maggie’s character was a little more of a challenge. She’s young, urban and loves all the girly-girl things I know little about. She’s tall and fashionable and very outgoing. Again, not anything I can easily connect with. I blogged about my dilemma at the time (https://joyceholmes.wordpress.com/2013/01/26/definitely-not-a-hip-young-urbanite/). Secondary characters are easy and fun to write; they can be quirky and even a little outrageous without necessarily needing to reveal what made them this way. Lead characters require more depth and motivation. I really wanted to do right by Maggie, because after everything she’d been through, she deserved it. Yes, she was impulsive and just a tad of a busybody, but once her background and motivations were made clear, her personality quirks became understandable and relatable.

I once knew a young man named Thomas. He was very much his own man and stubbornly independent, sometimes to his detriment. Thomas left this earth far too young, and to honour his memory, I named my male character, Tom O’Shay, after him. I also gave Tom some of that same quiet strength of character and stubborn independence. Who better to pit Maggie’s helpfulness against than someone who abhors needing help?

My inspiration for the storyline came from the place where all my stories come from. The desire to convey a real life situation full of emotion, which tugs on the heartstrings, and eventually finishes with a satisfying happy-ever-after. Hopefully, my readers will find that I accomplished this goal with Maggie and Tom’s tale, It’s Complicated.

GUEST POST:

THE INSPIRATION BEHIND EMERALD RING

The idea of a cowboy sidhe fascinated me. In Emerald’s Ring, Tristan Avery resonated with the old west, wearing wranglers, cowboy boots and a black Stetson. The setting takes place in the rustic red mountains of Sedona, Arizona. A mysterious setting filled with mystic possibilities.
Before I wrote Emerald’s Ring I took a vacation and stayed at the Enchantment resort, which is built in Boynton Canyon, eight miles from the quaint town of Sedona. It’s a magical resort nestled in the spectacular, nature-carved red rocks.
The spa resort blends in with the environment of the Southwestern décor and for a time you are transported away from the bustling sounds of the city into a vast vortex of geological development.
In the Coconino National Forest, I took a tour and hiked to an ancient Palatki Site. Old ancient writings were still carved into the rock beds. In my imagination the Sinaqua Indians came to life. I speculated on the culture of these mountain Indians and wondered what would happen if an ancient chalcedony stone was ripped through time and the spirit of the Palatki were held captive inside the vortex of the red mountain?
The idea spurred my imagination and Emerald’s Ring came to life. The heroine, Harmonia Shae, a time-traveler, is thrust into a whirlwind of chaos, when manipulated by a Sihir magician and forced to steal the chalcedony stone, along with seven ancient acorns from the Celtic tree of life.
Tristan, a sidhe warrior and part time rodeo bronco rider, leaves to Sedona for the annual rodeo. Unexpectedly, A Sumerian djinn female comes barreling into his world causing more ruckus than any bronco he’d ever encountered.
I put these two very different people together and wondered what would happen if they fell in love.

When the kind milkmaid is faced with unwanted attentions, Dolan must defend her honor with a choice that will ultimately change his life.

Keywords: Werewolf, Celtic, Irish, Dublin, shapeshifter, sidhe, fairies, fey, magic, prophecy

Claire O’Neil grew up hearing stories from her grandmother’s Irish homeland.  Her grandmother seemed to be personally acquainted with exotic fairies, mischievous pixies, even powerfully seductive shape-shifters.  On the eve of the older woman’s funeral, Claire is visited again by strangely erotic dreams which began on her sixteenth birthday, dreams which leave her breathless and aroused by the shadowy presence of a mysterious stranger.  At the funeral itself, she is approached by a foreigner who carries a letter from her grandmother.  Following the instructions in the letter, Claire is whisked away to Ireland to discover the legacy left behind by her grandmother.

Once in the Emerald Isle Claire is stunned to learn that her grandmother’s stories were real: the Dubh Sidhe and the Four Fey Courts of Dublin do exist.   More shockingly, an ancient prophecy has tied their fate to hers. At a chance encounter Claire comes face-to-face with the stranger from her dreams, and breathless doesn’t begin to describe the effect he has on her!  As she finds herself caught between rivals for leadership of the shape-shifters, Claire is kidnapped and held in seclusion by the mysterious stranger’s brother as part of their battle for leadership of the their family.  Only Claire can help the mysterious stranger to save himself and his clan from losing their power forever.  If she chooses to…and if she can accept that passion can take many forms.

GUEST POST:

Ireland…right? Emerald green hills, misty mornings, mysterious corners of auld Dublin town…it all cries out “listen…we want to tell you a story!”
At the time I wrote The Wolf Prince, I was living in Dublin as the plus-one for a corporate rotation.  My partner had to go to the office every day…I went, well, wherever I wanted.
I soon discovered that every part of Dublin has its own unique character.  And I don’t mean like any town has its own personality.  I mean different blocks on the same street are like entirely separate worlds.  And the parks…oh, the parks!  Three in particular drew me again and again.
St. Stephen’s Green is neutral ground where everybody can gather and it has a little bit of everything.  Iveagh Gardens is a secret corner with fallen down statues and old fountains that brood over the few picnickers who find their way there.  Marlay Park is a wild place where you just KNOW the Fae linger in the moonlight hoping that a human child wanders by.  Each has its own soul.
And yet…
There is something that connects them all.  I wandered through them, my pen and notebook in hand, feeling that somehow Iveagh knew that I had just been in St. Stephen’s…and when visiting Marlay Park it was like the wildlife had heard from their relatives closer to town that it was ok to let me pass. Knowledge seemed to pass like a breeze through the tree branches, through the very air of what they call the Fair City.
I became more and more convinced of that connection.  And, over my various visits I started to sense some population, some group of inhabitants just out of reach of our human perception active behind the scenes. At one point, I saw a sign for Dublin’s “Four Courts” and I had a revelation.  Ireland used to be four separate kingdoms.  And now, what remains just out of sight out is fairy legacy of four separate courts, each distinct, but each connect in this hidden, shadow Dublin.  Each has its politics, its squabbles and, like the town, its own distinct character.  As the wildest of the urban parks, it felt right that the Marlay court of “Sidhe” (pronounced “she”) would be the wildest, the most animal…the shapeshifters.

Then all I had to do was listen…and this story and others came to me…so if you happened to be passing through St. Stephen’s Green some time back and saw a woman with ice-blond hair being watched over by a plump, elegant swan while chatting with a stranger scribbling frantically to capture everything…that stranger was me…and as for what I was working so hard to capture, well, that’s the story you’ll find in The Wolf Prince.  The city told me many tales during my stay, but this was the first. I hope you enjoy it!
p.s. I love hearing from readers!  Please feel free to drop me a note at jayeraymee@gmail.com and I look forward to hearing from you!

Inspiration behind Show No Weakness

I drew my inspiration for Show No Weakness from my penchant for wounded heroes. I enjoy reading about them and most of my stories are about them. Two of my favorite classes in school were Sociology and Psychology, and I blame my fascination with the human psyche for this compulsion to torment my characters.

It’s intriguing to contemplate a big, tough man who tries to hide his vulnerability from the world. When I thought about people who portray strength in their everyday lives, a police officer immediately came to mind. Not only would he likely be physically strong, but in order to deal with the grueling aspects of his job, he’d need a tough temperament, as well.

What if this cop has been dealt a number of emotional blows throughout his life, some so intense they would’ve broken a lesser person? And what if this cop has been raised by the credo Show No Weakness? That gave me the basis for my hero, Cole. Poor Cole, the strong, tough-as-nails cop in Show No Weakness, is certainly haunted. He's hiding from an immense pain he’s not emotionally capable of facing.

But, in order to truly torment the unfortunate fellow, he must be given a temptation that would strike at the worst of his vulnerabilities. So he meets Joely, social worker and single mom, who's blatantly open about her emotions and her compulsion to help anyone in need. Cole is definitely in need, and Joely can’t resist trying to help him, even though she has no idea what he needs help with, and he has no intention of accepting her assistance.

Not only does Cole have to deal with his unwanted attraction for Joely, despite her meddling, there’s also her teenaged son to consider. Without some positive male influence, Taylor might be headed toward delinquency, and Cole finds he can’t turn his back on the boy. Because Cole couldn’t protect the child who meant the most to him, he feels an obligation to save every other child in peril.

I took my wounded hero and threw every emotional curveball I could think of to add to his suffering, knowing he’d rise to the occasion. The result is a poignant rollercoaster of love and discovery. I hope my readers will enjoy following Cole and Joely’s journey as much as I enjoyed writing it.

~ Joyce
