Poisonous Whispers!

Poisonous Whispers
A Fantasy Romance Novel
By Jana Begovic
Publisher: Roane Publishing
Release Date: December 5, 2016
Keywords: Fantasy, Romance, Saga, Reincarnation, Destiny, Betrayal, Past lives, Passion

“Don’t you ever forget about me...,” he whispers during their secret encounters. Like a curse, these simple words now haunt Leandra, a reputable psychiatrist, who finds herself in emotional chaos after the sudden breakup of her illicit affair. Unable to heal on her own and tormented by dreams in which supernatural forces create havoc with her fate, she desperately turns to David, a colleague psychiatrist, asking him to take her through past-life regression therapy. She hopes that this unorthodox and somewhat suspect technique will explain her profound connection to the lover who has abandoned her so abruptly.

The sessions take Leandra through 17th and 19th century Ireland, Italy and England, where love, loss and betrayal are the leitmotifs in an ambiance of co-mingled fantasy and reality. In her hypnotic state, Leandra recounts a saga of intoxicating love, dizzying passion, flaming lust and profound heartbreak. Despite the painful answers she finds under hypnosis, Leandra still cannot let go of the hope to reunite with her lover. Ultimately, the shattering revelations from her past-life incarnations, along with the turmoil over her ruined marriage, become the stepping stones of her introspective path to healing, self-discovery and an appreciation of true love.

With its seamlessly interwoven sub-plots, “Poisonous Whispers” lures the reader from one continent to another, from past to present. The affair at the center of the story is an anatomy of the heart in which the heroine’s sorrow-laced journey reflects the universal themes of love and loss.

Under weak candlelight, I notice tiny rivulets of blood trickle down from the scratch on his shoulder. At the same time, he takes my right hand and looks at my palm, which is injured from the brambles. Gently, I lick the blood off his wound, tasting its metallic saltiness and feeling that by tasting his blood, I have now captured a part of him for eternity. I shudder as I feel his tongue remove the blood from my palm. He raises his eyes and I see soft candlelight playing in them. His gaze is becoming more and more intense, its heat boring into my soul. Searching for each other's souls, we are finding hidden paths behind each other’s thoughts, treading into the uncharted territory of each other’s pure being and consciousness. Just as portals to our souls open and our energies touch and fuse into one, a bolt of lightning illuminates the room and colors it with a supernaturally blinding white, and the sky seems to split in two and tumble down to earth in thunderous fury.

At that epiphany of feeling no fear, but perfect tranquility, we are flooded by sudden and wordless knowledge. We read the same message in each other’s eyes: “Only now do I know, I have always known you. Only now do I know, I have loved you before. I just know not when….”

As quickly as it began, the storm dies down with what sounds like a loud sigh of exhaustion. We open windows to let the fresh scent of rain permeate the room. There is firewood in the fireplace in the corner of the room, and because we feel a slight chill on our skin, Kieran starts a fire using the candle flame. He is still naked, but I have put on the nightgown even though it is a bit damp. As the fire crackles and warms the room, we can see its reflection in the mirror on the opposite wall.

I have always been bewitched by the mirror’s beauty. My husband told me it was his mother who received it as a gift from a suitor. No one knows where he bought it. My mother-in-law fell in love with the mirror, but not with the suitor. When they found his dead body in a meadow, and could see no marks of any harm done to him, people concluded he had died from a broken heart. Some visitors to this house have said that in this mirror a man’s reflection appeared, a reflection of deepest sorrow.

The mirror is not hanging but leaning against the wall, and its height almost reaches the ceiling. It has a huge, ornate gilded frame and a crest on the top featuring leaves and flowers about which tiny fairies and dragonflies flutter, or sleep between the petals. An oversized, blue velvet armchair stands in front of the mirror. As the room is rather small, the fireplace light illuminates the mirror with an intensely warm glow. Flames dance seductively in the mirror, creating an illusion of another world behind it. Kieran and I exchange glances and we both let out a soft moan. Our love is still in that early stage when one look is sufficient to ignite an instantaneous flaming desire. His eyes are dark crystals infused with love and wanting. I quiver with desire as he clasps me in his embrace.

As far back as she can remember, Jana has been fascinated by storytelling and intoxicated with the written word. As a young child, she began spinning stories, talking to an imaginary friend and devouring fairy tales. As a teenager, she wrote maudlin love poetry; and as a young mother, a collection of fables. Her love of reading and writing drove her to study languages and literature, resulting in B.A. degrees in English and German Languages and Literature, an M.A. Degree in Literary Studies, as well as a B.Ed. Degree in English and Dramatic Arts. She works for the Government of Canada in the field of military language training and testing and her work, as a subject matter expert, has taken her all over the world. She was born in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina but has lived in Canada since 1991.

“Poisonous Whispers” is her debut novel. Currently, she is working on her second novel, as well as a collection of short stories.
She lives in Ottawa, Ontario with her husband.s so much in advance.

What books inspire you to write #romance? LOVE UNDER THE HARVEST MOON #BookBirthday @RoanePublishing

Happy Book Birthday to
Love Under the Harvest Moon!

Today, I have the authors of Love Under the Harvest Moon sharing a list of Top Two books they've read which inspired them to write and how each title influenced them. Be sure to check out the GIVEAWAY below!

T.E. Hodden

Okay, well, Nightshade by Mark Gattis is not romance, but it was brilliant, and... I picked it up and suddenly realised some guy (this was before Sherlock or League of Gentlemen, he was some guy) was being paid money to write Doctor Who. It wasn't even on TV. He wrote books, unlike the dull ones they made you read at school, about Doctor Who, and got paid. You could write books about anything. Anything!

Mort, by the great Terry Pratchett was the next big inspiration. It is a romance in the Discworld setting that toys affectionately with conventions and cliches. It fleets between Romance (as in Mills and Boon) and the Romantics (Byron, Shelley, et al) with some neat contrasts. But if you don't notice them, it doesn't matter. There is too much else going on.

Nemma Woolenfang

The White Mare by Jules Watson, and Camelot’s Shadow by Sarah Zettel , were big influences in the early stages of my writing life. Both books really triggered my love of literature as a teenager; they made me want to create worlds of my own, even if I wasn’t quite at the stage of developing them yet. They’re historical romances, pre-medieval really, and while Amidst the Strawberry Fields (my story in Under the Harvest Moon) is set in the modern day, some pagan inclinations do creep in, which I can attribute to books like these. They sparked my love of ancient history and truly excellent writing, and they’re the kind of stories that stay with you long after you’ve flicked that final page. For any historical romance lovers, I highly recommend both.

Patricia Crisafulli

Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood by Rebecca Wells mesmerized me with the author’s skill of layering the stories of generations of women, and how these threads enmesh the protagonist, Siddalee Walker, until she can cut herself free of the past to find her true love.
Big Stone Gap by Adriana Trigiani, inspired me to see how richly and vividly drawn characters can populate small town life, giving a story a far bigger canvas than its setting might otherwise indicate. The book’s emotional depth makes us cheer for the heroine as she tries to break out of her predictable life and take a chance on love.
 Claire Davon
Tell Me No Lies by Elizabeth Lowell. The tortured hero and fantastically drawn world of art and deception drew me in deeper as the characters were drawn in and even when there seemed no possible way to a happy ending…yet there was. Ahhh!
In the Midnight Rain by Ruth Wind. This multi-generational story with two flawed yet completely compelling main characters made me fall in love with the hero even while I was rooting for their love and prayed for a  happily ever after.

Laura Lamoreaux / T.L. French
Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell. This is a novel that tackles a lot of social issues—but the reason we care about them so much is because of the epic romance at the story’s center. A huge part of the story’s draw is watching Scarlett struggle, and wondering if she will ever find happiness.
Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier. This story is told by an unnamed narrator, who is almost induced to commit suicide because she believes her husband doesn’t love her, but loves his former wife, Rebecca. The power of emotions in this story is breathtaking—and so are its consequences.

A little about this newest release!

With the autumn harvest due in, and her boyfriend and the usual harvesters notably absent, Beth and her mother have to accept alternative help to bring in their farm’s crops. And Raz is all too eager to oblige. But Beth is uneasy, and with good reason. Raz and his crew have developed a worrying reputation around town. Assault, vandalism, theft – it seems there’s nothing they haven’t done…according to rumour. But are the gossips to be believed?

Will Beth listen to the disturbing tales and keep her distance? Or will she decide for herself and get to know the real Raz as they work together, amidst the strawberry fields?

T.E. Hodden – Autumn Leaves
So there I was, on the worst afternoon of my life, surrounded by the kind of argument that left me shaken and single. And there, in the park is Autumn, a beautiful, funny, sweet, trans-girl, who seems to be the only person in the world having a worse day than me. And that...that doesn't seem right.

So, here we are. I have one day, to make her smile, and change her world, before Autumn leaves to face her winter.

Laura Lamoreaux and T.L. French – A Harvest Homecoming

Patricia Crisafulli – Moon Dance
For Anna Oliver, life is one big to-do list and her responsibilities, large and crushing. When a storm brings down a tree on her roof—revealing damage that the insurance company won’t pay for—Anna feels as split in two as that old ash.
