EXCERPT:

The unrepentant sunshine streamed through the cracks, jubilant in its victory over the storm. Only five days since the devastation of Hurricane Irving and the sun acted as if nothing had ever happened. I turned away from the brightness with an ill-tempered snort.

Jake caught up with me on the gym floor. “Did you get any sleep?” His question hit me as a trifle vindictive.

“No. But you did.”

“I snore.” He grinned. Then his smile faded. “I thought you’d be gone this morning.”

“Why? I have to finish the job.”

“That’s…admirable.”

The thought that pestered me all night erupted from my mouth. “What happens to that woman when you catch her?”

“She’ll go back to jail.” He stopped by the double doors and folded his arms over his chest, blocking my path. “Then she’ll go to trial.”

“What if she did what she had to do?”

“There was no evidence it was self defense.”

I stared hard at his implacable façade. How could the man be alternately warm and cold, compassionate and hard, flexible and unyielding? I stepped around him and entered the gym. There were already bodies lined up waiting for our initial inspection, so I began the task of collecting information from my column of the dead. The hours passed as I searched pockets and noted identifying characteristics on those with no papers or markings. I glanced toward the open door as two men begin loading the last group onto a waiting truck.

One more victim to notate. I squatted next to her. Even in partial decay, her features were enough like mine it pushed me back on my heels. I lifted her arm. My breath hitched. Her Social Security number was so nearly like mine. I scanned the gym. Jake, the one man who might care if she became me or I became her, was absent. With a few strokes of the pen, I could die and live again.

My heart pounded with the possibility I might get a chance to start over without the baggage of my past dragging me down. I changed her identity with a few swipes of a permanent marker.

The number went onto my log with an unshaken hand, and I was free to escape the woman I used to be…the woman I didn’t want to be any longer.

Denise wrote her first story when she was in high school—seventeen hand-written pages on school-ruled paper and an obvious rip-off of the last romance novel she read. She earned a degree in accounting, giving her some nice skills to earn a little money, but her passion has always been writing. She has written numerous short stories and more than a few full-length novels. Her favorite pastimes when she’s not writing are spending time with her family, traveling, reading, and scrapbooking. She lives in Louisiana with her husband, two children, and one very chubby dog.

Guest Post: Inspiration for the character of Charlie Blake

By Alecia Stone

The character of Charlie Blake wasn’t based on any one real-life person per se but rather inspired by a few people I know. To begin with, the character just popped into my head. It was unexpected. I didn’t sit down and plan to create this person; this person, more or less, found me. Perhaps he was sitting in my subconscious for some time waiting to emerge, for when he did, he was almost fully formed. He had a name, an age and an origin. All I had to do was fill in the gaps. So before there was even a story, there was Charlie Blake. The story evolved around this character.

With Charlie being an orphan, I sought inspiration from family and friends who had experience with the foster care system, so I had good knowledge of how the social care system worked and, to some extent, the mentality of the children in care, so that was interesting to explore, and it was a real eye opener. As for Charlie’s unique abilities – abilities beyond that of a normal human being – that’s where mythology and an active imagination stepped in. On the outside, Charlie’s just your average teenager dealing with the stresses of growing up, but on the inside, he’s a boy whose very existence could change the course of humanity.

Excerpt:

Charlie looked back at the man and said, ‘I’d guess you’re about … fifty?’

The man sighed, rubbing his forehead.

‘I meant forty-five,’ Charlie corrected himself.

The man chuckled. ‘It’s all right, kid. At this rate I’d be dead in a month.’

Charlie glanced at Alex and Richmond, who both looked just as confused as he felt. Addressing the man, he asked, ‘Do you want us to take you to a hospital?’

‘Thanks for the offer, kid, but there isn’t a doctor in this world that can help me.’ The man paused, as if deciding whether he should continue. ‘I’m not fifty – or forty-five. My name is Derkein Odessa. I’m from Long Island, New York, and I’m twenty-seven years old.’

An awkward silence filled the room. It was as if the man had spoken a foreign language, and the trio hadn’t understood a single word of it.

‘Did I hit you on the head?’ Alex asked.

Derkein smiled without humour. ‘I didn’t think you’d believe me.’

An unsettling feeling stirred within Charlie. He was certain he had heard the name Derkein before. He just couldn’t remember where. ‘Have we – met before?’ he asked.

‘I doubt it.’ Derkein slipped his hand inside his jacket and pulled out a thin, black book. ‘Take it,’ he said, holding the book up.

Charlie stepped forward, snatched the book, and stepped back. On the cover were the words PASSPORT. United States of America. He looked back at Derkein.

‘Go ahead,’ Derkein insisted. ‘Have a look.’

Charlie opened the passport to the photo page, and his heart stopped. It was all there: Derkein Odessa, 22 JUL 1985, New York, U.S.A. He was looking at a photo of a young man in his twenties. He heard Alex gasp beside him. She said something, but he didn’t hear it, for his mind was elsewhere. That feeling of familiarity came over him again, but this time he knew why.

It wasn’t the first time he had seen the man in the photo. The wrinkle-free young face, shoulder-length black hair, still olive eyes staring back at him …

‘Hard to believe, isn’t it?’ Derkein’s voice interrupted his thoughts. ‘A few weeks ago, I looked like the person in that photo. Now look at me.’

Charlie stared at Derkein in utter disbelief. His first impression was that he had to be dreaming. There was no other explanation for it. He felt the passport slip out of his hand, but he didn’t take his eyes off Derkein. The last time he had seen those eyes they were staring into oblivion. Now here he was. Alive when he was supposed to be dead. Real when he wasn’t even supposed to exist.

5 Tips For Writing the Dreaded Blurb #Writetip #blurb

I'm not a blurb goddess by any means, but I want to share what I've learned on the topic so far.

For Eye of the Soul which releases in Oct of this year, the publisher and I went back and forth 7 or 8 times with blurb tweaks before we were both happy with it. I would love to post it here for the world to see, but alas, my contract keeps me from doing so until March 18th when the biggie cover & blurb reveal takes place.

But enough about me. Let's dive in.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We'll start with the basics - what IS a blurb?
It's a short description / summary of a book used for promotional purposes. Short? Yes. But how the heck can I pack what happens in my 80,000 word novel into less than 200 - 250 words???!?!?!?!
Start out by just DOING. Write your summary. Be wordy, then grab that red pen.
Be mindful of these 5 things as you're writing, slicing, & dicing.
1. Use a compelling (seductive) pitch to draw readers. It's a 'hook' like the one required within the first paragraph of a novel to nab attention. For example, let's look at the first line of Blue Moon, a paranormal romance by J.A. Belfield.
"Someone is watching the Holloway pack, and this time, the female isn’t the target."
Catchy. Raises questions. Makes you WANT to read the next line, doesn't it?
2.  Plot. Give enough to set the stage, but don't bore. This is where you want to introduce the MC and the conflict they face, internal or external. Just make sure it's concise and spoiler free!
Here's an example from Sacrificial Oath, my short story in the Make Believe anthology.
"An impetuous act unwittingly makes Alesuela the fulfillment of the Sovereign’s Blood Oath to their Goddess. In five days, she’ll be forced to make the greatest choice of her life: become the virginal sacrifice already promised, or force the man she loves most to die in her place."
3. Use YOUR unique voice. Your tone.
4. Use riveting words. Ones that will draw on the reader's emotions and create images in their minds. Be sure they're specific to your book's genre, too. If you're writing a fantasy blurb for a D&D type story, I'd suggest leaving out wordings like 'belly butterflies' or 'the hot guy next door'. Here's an example from my favorite fantasy novel of 2013 (so far) A Cast of Stones by Patrick Carr.
"In the backwater village of Callowford, Errol Stone's search for a drink is interrupted by a church messenger who arrives with urgent missives for the hermit priest in the hills. Desperate for coin, Errol volunteers to deliver them but soon finds himself hunted by deadly assassins. Forced to flee with the priest and a small band of travelers, Errol soon learns he's joined a quest that could change the fate of his kingdom."
Missives, hermit priest, coin, band of travelers, quest, kingdom. All fantasy related. Urgent, desperate, and forced to flee all bring images to mind of what might happen to Errol.
5. A cliff hanger ending. Ask a question or use a last line that will have the reader dying to know more. For example, check out the last lines of The Glass Man, an Urban Fantasy by Jocelyn Adams.
"With the Glass Man threatening everyone she loves, can Lila accept who she is in time to end his bloody reign? Or will she succumb to his dark power and become the vehicle of destruction for the human race?"
If you're still at a loss, head to the library or local book store and grab a few of your genre books from the shelves. What makes you want to read one over the other? Look for similarities in length, wording, tension, and the desire it instills within you.
Early #Review : Silent Echoes by @aimeelaine #PNR #GamesofZeus
Publication Date: March 11, 2013
Paranormal Romance
From Goodreads:
For years, Ian Sands has enjoyed his life as a bachelor, taking advantage of singlehood and exploring his own definition of passion—whoever she may be. Blonde. Brunette. Tall. Short. Hot. Not. Five months ago, all that changed.
Ian’s been celibate, frustrated and desperately seeking answers to why one woman, who doesn’t play by girls’ rules, haunts his every waking moment.
As a renovations specialist, Taylor Marsh lives, works and breathes construction—a profession her southern belle of a mother would rather Taylor not touch. The same goes for Ian; Mama Marsh would never approve of him.
Like Ian, though, each time he and Taylor draw near, something compels her to get closer.
Something else tells her to run away.
Fast.
As much as their histories suggest they shouldn’t be together, neither Taylor nor Ian can deny the pull, and the two succumb, indulging in a relationship that brings pleasure to body, mind and soul.
Doing so, though, also ushers in a series of events both should have foreseen as well as one final outcome neither expected.
 Reincarnation, lost love, deceit, jealousy, murder, hot steamy - this book has it all. Another great story by Ms. Laine. I love her writing style & voice. She's distinctive in a cliche genre.
Let's dive right in.
Yummies:  LOVED how flashes from the past play throughout this story, how the plot is revealed to us readers while the characters are clueless.
The setting is so richly described. Perhaps the author is well acquainted with the Carolinas???  hehehe
The mysterious elements are awesome, with just enough revealed each chapter so you just HAVE to know what the heck & how the heck. And the creep factor later on in the book ... creepy!
As for characters - LOVE me some Ian, that's for sure. Love how he & Taylor are total opposites. One city & clean, the other country & a contractor - opposite roles of what you're thinking, trust me! Gives a nice unique change for romance IMO.
Yuckies:  I'm going to premise this part by stating that Hide & Seek (GoZ #1) absolutely rocked. LOVED it. HERE is my 5 star review. Silent Echoes, while just as well written, just didn't connect with me as well. The tension - external conflict - wasn't as evident, and didn't drive the plot forward. It was more the mystery that kept me interested. While this is a good thing, honestly it hindered that feeling of 'I have to finish this book in 1 sitting!!!'. Just wasn't quite AMAZING! for me.
And lets face it - Ian is hot, but he's no Tripp. *wink*
Recommend: Oh heck yes. Anything written my Ms. Laine is WELL WORTH YOUR TIME!
