The Inspiration behind It's Complicated

Maggie Lapage, my female character in It’s Complicated, made her first appearance in Show No Weakness as a young co-worker of Joely Sinclair. Maggie had a knack for stirring up trouble. She called it helping people. Others might call it meddling. But she always had the best intentions. Several of my readers told me how much they loved her feisty personality, and their comments inspired me to write her story. I had a scenario in my head where she’d fit perfectly and, from there, the story quickly came together.

The storyline formed easily, but accurately portraying Maggie’s character was a little more of a challenge. She’s young, urban and loves all the girly-girl things I know little about. She’s tall and fashionable and very outgoing. Again, not anything I can easily connect with. I blogged about my dilemma at the time (https://joyceholmes.wordpress.com/2013/01/26/definitely-not-a-hip-young-urbanite/). Secondary characters are easy and fun to write; they can be quirky and even a little outrageous without necessarily needing to reveal what made them this way. Lead characters require more depth and motivation. I really wanted to do right by Maggie, because after everything she’d been through, she deserved it. Yes, she was impulsive and just a tad of a busybody, but once her background and motivations were made clear, her personality quirks became understandable and relatable.

I once knew a young man named Thomas. He was very much his own man and stubbornly independent, sometimes to his detriment. Thomas left this earth far too young, and to honour his memory, I named my male character, Tom O’Shay, after him. I also gave Tom some of that same quiet strength of character and stubborn independence. Who better to pit Maggie’s helpfulness against than someone who abhors needing help?

My inspiration for the storyline came from the place where all my stories come from. The desire to convey a real life situation full of emotion, which tugs on the heartstrings, and eventually finishes with a satisfying happy-ever-after. Hopefully, my readers will find that I accomplished this goal with Maggie and Tom’s tale, It’s Complicated.

Nancy dragged the bonnet from her aching head and swung it by its ribbons, using it to dash intrusive sprays of vegetation out of her way. Wrapped in smothering thoughts, she did not hear the voices until she stepped out of the narrow way into the edge of a field.

Only a few yards away, Bartholomew Boult was speaking to one of his farmhands. He turned as Nancy appeared abruptly behind him and snapped a command. The farmhand slouched off with an interested glance over his shoulder.

Boult took a couple of steps towards her. “Miss Worth? May I be of assistance?”

Nancy blinked the angry tears from her eyes, her spine ram-rod straight. “I know my way, thank you, Mr Boult. I am quite all right.”

He came nearer. “Are you sure?”

He was too close for her comfort. She could smell the maleness of him and, despite her dislike of the man, her body betrayed her. Her belly fluttered and she was uneasily certain that he could feel the warmth that had flooded her loins.

He smiled, relishing her discomposure. His wager with Satterthwaite was as good as won. A ripe, juicy plum, ready to fall into his hand. The only question was whether she would fall without the prize of marriage. And whether it would be worth the brouhaha if she did, he thought cynically.

No harm in edging the matter along. He reached out a forefinger, set it under her chin and planted a kiss on her lips.

The next instant, his ears were ringing from the slap she dealt him.

“How dare you?” She was standing very upright, her eyes kindling with fury. “You forget yourself, sir.”

He rubbed his cheek ruefully, but a grin spread over his face. So she wasn’t the easy conquest he had thought. Better! Much better. This would provide some sport.

“I beg your forgiveness, but you must agree that some of the fault is yours. You have such damnably kissable lips.”

“Let me pass, if you please.” Nancy crammed the bonnet back onto her head. If she had remembered that this path touched on Boult’s land, she would have thought twice about coming this way on her own. She had not forgotten entirely the suspicion that had surfaced, so formless that it was like trying to catch a moonbeam in a jar. How had he known that she had been visiting Susan that day? But she was far too angry to be afraid.

“Come, Miss Worth, cry quits. Indeed, you have my sincere apologies. May I squire you back to Millcote, to make amends?”

“No, you may not.” Her thunderous face reinforced her words.

“I bow to your wishes. Believe me, I have no desire to put you out of countenance. And pray put my lapse of behaviour out of your mind. It shall not happen again.”

Sincerity, that’s the dandy. Let her think she’s got the better of me. I’ll wager she ain’t been kissed before. Give her time, and she’ll want more.

It was all Nancy could do not to run, but she kept her head up and walked steadily away down the path. Once she was sure he was not following her, she stopped to scrub at her lips, but she could still taste him.

She was uncomfortably aware of the flash of desire that had swept over her, but he could not have known of her feelings, could he? Moistening her handkerchief at her lips, she scrubbed harder. Surely, she could have these yearnings only for the man who engaged her affections? It was what everybody said happened. And she did not like Bartholomew Boult one little bit.

Water. She needed to wash his touch away with the cleanliness of water. There was a stream a little further on. She could dip her handkerchief in that. But when she came to the banks of the brook, Will Carlton was sitting there with his back towards her and his sketchpad on his knee.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

I always wanted to work with animals, although I was strongly attracted to drama and flirted for a while with the idea of trying for a Drama College. But the animals won, and I became a nurse at the Blue Cross Animal Hospital.

I’d been there seven years when the hospital had central heating put in. I married the engineer and spent the next twenty-seven years driving a truck known as the Flying Pig around the building-sites of London, loaded to the gunnels with boiler sections, copper tube and the occasional smelly contents of a grease-trap.

When we stopped the installation side, there were no longer fitters waiting impatiently for my truck and me. For a while I acted as part-time secretary/book-keeper/maker of tea, but seized the opportunity to pursue my love of writing.

Do you remember ‘composition’ when you were at school? That was my favourite thing, apart from history. Even when I was driving The Pig, stories would come into my mind and I couldn’t wait to get back and write them down. Walking Polly the English Bull Terrier helps (she goes at two miles a fortnight!), as does running through our lovely Surrey countryside.

London Saint James:

Saving Private Ryan. Why? It was just one of those movies where I cried, and cried. Not sure why I like movies that make me cry. Perhaps it’s cathartic.

T.E. Hodden:

Oddly I am sucker for one of the worst movies ever made. There is something wonderful about Escape To Victory. Not least because it is a war movie that is about hope, and human spirit rather than combat. I know it is odd that a film should make light of a war, but the idea that some of the greatest footballers in the world need to be told how to play by Michael Caine and Sylvester Stallone is just glorious.

S.L. Hughson:

This is a hard one because I love military movies. I mean, men in uniform? What’s not to like? I’ll say Top Gun, and the reason is obvious. Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer without shirts, playing beach volleyball. Enough said.

Jean Young:

Pearl Harbor is my favorite military movie. It is courageous and romantic at the same time—what can beat that? Seriously, the movie is okay, but it was Danny Walker (played by Josh Hartnett) who inspired me to write. He was handsome, no doubt, and brave. However, in my opinion, he wasn’t loved in the way he deserved to be loved. And I decided on the spot as I was watching the movie that if I ever wrote a love story, I would “love” my hero wholeheartedly.

Philip Lisagor:

Platoon, which shows the ambiguous battle of good and evil and brings the viewer into the ‘fog of battle.’

Terri Rochenski:

The Patriot. I loved Mel Gibson’s character and the arc of his story line. So much grief, sorrow, and love wrapped into a few hours … LOVE!

Michelle Ziegler:

              Oh my poor husband.  I don't think he was prepared for being the husband of an author.  Hehe.  Well, here it goes.

               Our first kiss was pretty embarrassing.  It was the classic, he went in for the kiss and I went in for the hug.  I suddenly realized what happened and let out a better-left-unnamed expletive. I swore it was only in my head and later learned it was not.  Anyway, throwing caution to the wind I fixed the situation and turned the biggest blunder into the best first kiss ever. 

            Second embarrassment I blame on pregnancy.  I was on the phone with our cable provider when they couldn’t, even if their lives had depended on it, find us in their system.  I went to spell our last name and literally forgot.  My husband finished it for me, but his look said it all.  It had only been four years of marriage and two years of dating.  But who’s perfect.

London Saint James:

Topping the charts at number two is: Preparing my first big holiday meal for him and his family.  I’d been up all night, baking, peeling vegetables, doing all the things you do, etc. He came into the kitchen to help, pulled the ham out of the oven and said, “Baby, I think you forgot something.” I stopped whipping the potatoes and turned around to see the ham that I’d taken out of the plastic shrink-wrap that morning, put into a tinfoil pan and covered with honey and brown sugar still encased in a thin, clear, plastic cover that I somehow overlooked. Oops!

And the number one spot goes to: His old pair of police issue handcuffs latched on my wrists. Him with this “Oh Shit” look on his face. The moment I realize he wasn’t joking, he couldn’t locate the key. Our door bell sounding out the arrival of company…

Lisa A. Adams:

My husband and I have been married for almost eleven years and we actually knew each other several years before that in college. I would have to say that one of my most embarrassing moments was when we had originally started dating. Let's just say I had a wardrobe malfunction in the middle of a Wal-Mart. Luckily, there were several clothes that I could buy there and fix the problem easily. However, it wasn't before half of Morehead City Wal-Mart had seen "the girls" prominently displayed.

The second top embarrassing moment came a few years later when we were actually getting ready to walk down the aisle. My father decided to have one more talk with his new son-in-law. 

Dad -Son, are you sure you know what you're getting yourself into? 'Cause once, you say "I do", there are no returns or exchanges. 
Ray - Yes, Sir.
Dad - Good, because you know I already had to take her back once...
Me - *crushing embarrassment*
Pastor - Okay, so is everyone clear on the service and what will happen?
Dad- I'm good. I mean how many times do you get to give your daughter away... you know except for the first time. *Laughing*
Me - *Almost in tears* Really, dad?
Ray - *Grabs my hand and kisses it* I love you. Are you ready?
Me- *Miraculously, all better*

Rebecca Hart:

I’d have to say for the most part, I am hard to embarrass, but I’ve had a few adventures with my bohunk, Pete, who is impossible to embarrass, so I guess, at least by comparison, I can come up with two moments over our ten years together.

The first one to come to mind when I read the question was a time at the very beginning of our relationship. We were working together at a golf event for a previous employer and had stopped for gas during some in the car bickering. Things exploded and we ended up having a shouting match/pseudo-brawl on the side of a crowded  Jersey highway. Things worked out, obviously. *grin*

The second embarrassing moment took some thought, but I’ve settled on getting my lower body piercing. Pete had come with me to the appointment, and all I can say is there is nothing more embarrassing than having the virtues and various piercing potentials of your lower half discussed by a complete stranger and the love of your life…as if you aren’t even there. Beyond embarrassing, but I definitely don’t regret doing it. *wink*

I think I’m hard to embarrass because it’s really hard for me to recall any seriously embarrassing moments. I mean, there was the one time my ex’s mom walked in on us, which was totally traumatizing and massively embarrassing, but I think that’s a pretty run of the mill experience. I wish I had more, really, because they make such great material for writing.
