Letter from the author to the lovely MC, Gabrielle

Dear Gabrielle,

I know I messed up your vacation plans, but I couldn’t help myself, I had a different journey in mind for you.

You expected a fun camping trip with your girlfriends, but I uprooted you from the security of your home in Cornwall, Ontario, and brought you to a bed-and-breakfast where paranormal sightings are common. I added a touch of mystery by creating a myth; ‘Anyone who encounters the ghost does not live to tell the tale.’ Spotting and interacting with the famous ghost made you a prime target.

I’ll admit by doing so I created stress, but life isn’t always easy. For one week you witnessed or experienced deceit, cruelty, misery and violence. Emotions unfamiliar to you; however in reality many people live with it daily. If nothing else, the experience opened your eyes to a different world.

Although your friend Wendy’s motto, ‘everything happens for a reason’, is one of your favorite, at times when faced with change or tragedy, remaining optimistic is difficult, but you managed to. When you interacted with the ghost, you saw an opportunity of a lifetime whereas Deputy Rick Brady saw danger.

Also, if ‘everything happens for a reason’ the circumstances in which you met the handsome deputy would have been different at the campground, therefore the outcome as well. In St. Clair, he became your lover, your first. You loved his smile, enjoyed his company, and you trusted your instincts. On the day you were meant to leave, you weighed the pros and cons and for everyone’s safety you chose to spend the remainder of your vacation with him instead of continuing on with your girlfriends. Your decision demonstrated a sign of independence, of growth, and the first step in forming a relationship.

Deputy Brady’s insights about your life being in danger were accurate. The horrid incidents began the day Suzanne suffered a head injury, and the events didn’t stop until you were taken hostage. Despite the terror you felt at that moment, your will to survive kicked-in, and you managed to escape the villain’s claws. The notion is as old as dirt, but I truly believe good will always triumph.

Your vacation ended and you left Rick’s home, but the affection you felt for him kept growing stronger. You both realized a long distance relationship wasn’t easy, but you never gave up.

Today, as I sat in the last pew of the church and listened to the vows you and Rick exchanged, I knew I’d made the right choice.

Your friend, G.P. Gadbois
