Letter from the author to the lovely MC, Gabrielle

Dear Gabrielle,

I know I messed up your vacation plans, but I couldn’t help myself, I had a different journey in mind for you.

You expected a fun camping trip with your girlfriends, but I uprooted you from the security of your home in Cornwall, Ontario, and brought you to a bed-and-breakfast where paranormal sightings are common. I added a touch of mystery by creating a myth; ‘Anyone who encounters the ghost does not live to tell the tale.’ Spotting and interacting with the famous ghost made you a prime target.

I’ll admit by doing so I created stress, but life isn’t always easy. For one week you witnessed or experienced deceit, cruelty, misery and violence. Emotions unfamiliar to you; however in reality many people live with it daily. If nothing else, the experience opened your eyes to a different world.

Although your friend Wendy’s motto, ‘everything happens for a reason’, is one of your favorite, at times when faced with change or tragedy, remaining optimistic is difficult, but you managed to. When you interacted with the ghost, you saw an opportunity of a lifetime whereas Deputy Rick Brady saw danger.

Also, if ‘everything happens for a reason’ the circumstances in which you met the handsome deputy would have been different at the campground, therefore the outcome as well. In St. Clair, he became your lover, your first. You loved his smile, enjoyed his company, and you trusted your instincts. On the day you were meant to leave, you weighed the pros and cons and for everyone’s safety you chose to spend the remainder of your vacation with him instead of continuing on with your girlfriends. Your decision demonstrated a sign of independence, of growth, and the first step in forming a relationship.

Deputy Brady’s insights about your life being in danger were accurate. The horrid incidents began the day Suzanne suffered a head injury, and the events didn’t stop until you were taken hostage. Despite the terror you felt at that moment, your will to survive kicked-in, and you managed to escape the villain’s claws. The notion is as old as dirt, but I truly believe good will always triumph.

Your vacation ended and you left Rick’s home, but the affection you felt for him kept growing stronger. You both realized a long distance relationship wasn’t easy, but you never gave up.

Today, as I sat in the last pew of the church and listened to the vows you and Rick exchanged, I knew I’d made the right choice.

Your friend, G.P. Gadbois

Meet the authors of Hearts of Valor! #Romance @RoanePublishing #Giveaway!

Tour Schedule

I'm thrilled to have my fellow authors here today from the Hearts of Valor anthology!! I wanted to know what their favorite military theme movie was & why. Here's what they had to say...

London Saint James:
Saving Private Ryan. Why? It was just one of those movies where I cried, and cried. Not sure why I like movies that make me cry. Perhaps it’s cathartic.

T.E. Hodden:
Oddly I am sucker for one of the worst movies ever made. There is something wonderful about Escape To Victory. Not least because it is a war movie that is about hope, and human spirit rather than combat. I know it is odd that a film should make light of a war, but the idea that some of the greatest footballers in the world need to be told how to play by Michael Caine and Sylvester Stallone is just glorious.

S.L. Hughson:
This is a hard one because I love military movies. I mean, men in uniform? What’s not to like? I’ll say Top Gun, and the reason is obvious. Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer without shirts, playing beach volleyball. Enough said.

Jean Young:
Pearl Harbor is my favorite military movie. It is courageous and romantic at the same time—what can beat that? Seriously, the movie is okay, but it was Danny Walker (played by Josh Hartnett) who inspired me to write. He was handsome, no doubt, and brave. However, in my opinion, he wasn’t loved in the way he deserved to be loved. And I decided on the spot as I was watching the movie that if I ever wrote a love story, I would “love” my hero wholeheartedly.

Philip Lisagor:
Platoon, which shows the ambiguous battle of good and evil and brings the viewer into the ‘fog of battle.’

Terri Rochenski:
The Patriot. I loved Mel Gibson’s character and the arc of his story line. So much grief, sorrow, and love wrapped into a few hours … LOVE!

Guest Post - Adam Millard on the inspiration behind Soul of Dust! #UF #Demons #Wizard

Today, I have Adam Millard, author of Soul of Dust, sharing his inspiration to this kick@$$ UF just released from Roane Publishing!

Be sure to check out the giveaway!!!

~~~oOo~~~
Back in 2014, I wrote two urban fantasy novels with strong female protagonists. These books were entitled Wanderlust and Rue respectively. At the time, I was following what I believed to be the standard structure for urban fantasy, that the majority of the genre’s readers were female and that, in order to sell a few copies, I had to give them something to relate to, and in making my lead characters kickass young girls, the books had a much better chance of succeeding.
You see, I’d worked my way through The Morganville Vampires series, the entire Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter series, and various other collections featuring strong female characters in lead roles, saw the success of those books, and decided that I would attempt the same.
Moving into 2015—where Rue is still doing the rounds with publishers and agents—I was ready to write another urban fantasy novel after completing work on several bizarro and horror titles. But I wanted to try something different. I told myself that there is no generic formula in literature, regardless of genre; that I could do whatever the hell I wanted.
I sat down to write Soul of Dust intent on creating a deeply-flawed male protagonist, an anti-hero, of sorts, but a guy with a purpose. This guy wouldn’t be particularly handsome or good with women, but he would have a job to do, so long as the pay was right.
Jack Bridge is a centuries-old semi-immortal mage who just happens to also be a private investigator. He has, in the past, almost drunk himself to death, which takes some doing if you’re semi-immortal. He’s antisocial, doesn’t play well with others, and his wand—Phoenix, due to the rare feather at its core—does most of the talking. In the city, he is the go-to guy when creatures from Elsewhere slip through into our world, and he’s damn good at his job.
I wanted to give this poor sonofabitch as many flaws as possible, to make him almost impossible to get along with. I don’t know what it is but I am inexplicably drawn to profoundly damaged characters. I like my heroes and heroines with a side order of asshole or sass. I want them to convince me, as a reader or writer, that they are something other than what they seem. Jack Bridge is such a character—one of my favourites so far, and there have been a lot over the years—and it’s his bitterness and sardonicism which makes him so much fun to write.
In writing Soul of Dust, I also wanted to explore a new beast, a creature which doesn’t get as much exposure as, say, vampires and zombies, which are currently ubiquitous. I began to research the aswang—a Philippine werewolf, of sorts, which devours unborn fetuses in order to survive—and thought it was far more interesting than taking the easy route: opting for some overused trope.
Am I inspired enough to write more Jack Bridge novels in the future? I wouldn’t bet against it.
Publisher: Roane Publishing
Keywords: Urban Fantasy, Sleuth, Paranormal, Investigator, Wizard, Demons, magic, Gritty
Sometimes being semi-immortal just isn’t enough.
Jack Bridge is having a very bad day.
Life as a private investigator is tough, but it’s even worse when you’re a semi-immortal wizard private investigator whose tolerance for humans grows thinner by the day. Just when he thinks things can’t get worse, in she walks.
Kate West, beautiful and complex in equal measure, with a problem only Jack can solve. Daemons, magic, voodoo, and vamps; it’s all very real, and Jack Bridge is the last line of defense against the creatures of Elsewhere.
Sometimes being semi-immortal just isn’t enough.
About Adam Millard:
Adam Millard is the author of twenty novels, ten novellas, and more than a hundred short stories, which can be found in various collections and anthologies. Probably best known for his post-apocalyptic fiction, Adam also writes fantasy/horror for children. He created the character Peter Crombie, Teenage Zombie just so he had something decent to read to his son at bedtime. Adam also writes Bizarro fiction for several publishers, who enjoy his tales of flesh-eating clown-beetles and rabies-infected derrieres so much that they keep printing them. His "Dead" series has recently been the filling in a Stephen King/Bram Stoker sandwich on Amazon's bestsellers chart. Adam writes and edits for UK horror website This Is Horror, whose columnists include BC Furtney, Simon Bestwick and Simon Marshall-Jones.
Adam lives with his beautiful wife, Zoe-Ray, and their wonderful son, Phoenix Justice. There are also chickens, rabbits and cats, but the less said about that the better.
Got a favorite dragon? #Giveaway #TensList by Sheryl Winters #Skydreamer #Dragons #Fantasy
Tour Schedule
I'm thrilled to have my fellow Pen Sister Sheryl Winters here today as part of her Skydreamer blog tour!! My lovely bud is a dragon lover, and with Skydreamer being about dragons...well, I just had to know her top ten favorite dragons / dragon stories.
Be sure to check out the giveaway, & thanks for stopping by!!
~~~oOo~~~

This Tens list was actually hard. I expected to breeze through it but who knew it would be this hard ranking dragon’s I’ve loved for so long.

10.  CANTH: Anne McCaffrey. “Dragonquest.” I loved Canth, I cried when he fell after he tried to go to the Red Star. He was smart, kind and loving. I felt for Fnor but it was Canth I fell in love with.

9. SMAUG. J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit.” He was fierce in the book and he scared me in the movie.

8. Hungarian Horntale, from J. K. Rowlings, “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.” Nuff said. Viscous.. scary..

7. Falcor from the the never ending Story. I wanted to ride that dragon so bad!!!

6. The Male Dragon. “Reign of fire.” No real name (perhaps he took it with him into death) this dragon was a scary thing to behold even if he was just in a movie.

5. TOOTHLESS “How to Train a dragon.”  Cressida Cowell.   I {{HEART}} TOOTHLESS.

4. Ingeloakastimizilian from the crystal shard. Don’t be put off by the name. Inge.. (as I like to call him) was a fierce fighter but not as good as Wulfgar and Drizzt Do’Urden.
3. Cyan Bloodbane, Dragon Lance. Awesome green dragon. He crept into your dreams.. and then he scared you to death.
2. Gleep from “Hit or Myth.” Sure he was a small dragon and often mascaraed as a War Unicorn, but then again, who hasn’t?

1. Draven Winterbourn. “Skydreamer” The thoughtful, smart, kind and occasionally temper provoked King of the Dragon-Changers. Sure he can change from Dragon to Human. Sure he’s in love with his wife but you want to know what I really love about him? He defends his own, always.

Check out the goods...

Accidental Valentine

Keywords:  Contemporary, Romance, Valentine's Day, Short Stories, Anthology, Sweet

Guiding Hearts by Claire Gillian
Description: Is a lonely woman's GPS sentient or is her subconscious taking her by the hand to help heal a scarred heart?

When Jemma Ernst's GPS malfunctions and sends her to the home of handsome and engaging Gabriel Nash, she writes it off as a fluke. But she can't seem to reprogram him out of her thoughts nor her GPS.

Better Latte Than Never by Katrina Sizemore
Description: Single and cold on Valentine’s Day, Hailey Merritt is not looking forward to working all day at the coffee shop while everyone around her is cheery with romance and she’s stuck trying to figure out her next step in life.

But, when a special bouquet arrives for her from a secret admirer, she decides to reserve judgment on this holiday and find whomever sent the flowers.

Maybe Cupid has a plan to make this her favorite Valentine’s Day ever.

Dream Architect by S.L. Hughson
Description: Taylor and Sons Custom Design keeps ASHLIN TAYLOR at arm’s length from her dream job. If only she were a son, she could follow her architectural dream. In the Taylor creed, girls get married and boys have careers. DYLAN CUTRIGHT focuses on finishing college and landing an architectural engineering job in a large firm. Minus emotional ties.

After their accidental encounter, their attraction is amplified during their work interaction. Unlike her family, Dylan encourages Ashlin to pursue her dream by enrolling in college. He even argues her case with Uncle Mike. All of this support confuses Ashlin because when she moves closer to him, he rebuffs her for reasons she can only speculate about.

Valentine’s Day might be the perfect opportunity for Ashlin to make him notice her. They are working together - alone - on the most romantic day of the year. Dylan builds her dream of career, but will he ever lower his walls and become more than just the man IN her dreams?

One Hot Angel by Jaylee Austin
Description: Oblivious to Tiffany Jenkins in three short weeks her life will end—unless she makes the perfect choice. Will she chose revenge and expose her ex-husband? Or chose love and surrender her heart to the only man who can save her?

Rock My Bones by Wendy Sparrow
Description: Jared has been eyeing the sexy mural painter from inside the museum’s paleontology lab, but she’s way out of his league. He can’t let her paint that obviously misplaced fern, though…even if it means initiating contact.

You could call her a paleontology groupie, but Shay Meyers is interested in a more modern specimen. An adult male Homo Sapien to be exact—one who needs to be dragged out of his lab for a practical course in mating rituals. If she’s lucky, this will be the Valentine’s Day she rocks his bones.

So I asked the five authors of Accidental Valentine for their
Favorite Five VDay candy,
and here's what they had to say...

Claire Gillian:

Whitman's Sampler (the little box with 4 chocolates in them)
Russell Stover Pecan Delight
Necco Conversation Hearts with the writing on them.
De Met's Turtles
Fifth Avenue candy bar (hard to find!)
If Cadbury ever makes their mini-eggs in Valentine's Day colors (have they?), you can make that number ONE and the Fifth Avenue will have to drop off the list.

Katrina Sizemore:

My favorite candies are Ferrero's trio (Rocher, Rondoir and Raffaello), just about any Godiva chocolate (especially the ones with nuts or fruity fillings), and Almond Joys.

Jaylee Austin:

Valentine’s candy my favorite is anything with caramel and nuts. White chocolate dipped strawberries are the best. White chocolate kisses with almonds are good.

S.L. Hughson:

My favorite candy is dark chocolate. The best Valentine’s Day includes a selection of dark chocolate truffles from our local chocolatier: Moonstruck Chocolates. Chocolate covered almonds are the next best thing (as long as it’s dark chocolate).

Wendy Sparrow:

Dark Chocolate Lindt Balls
Milky Way Dark
Salted Caramels
Chocolate Orange
Chocolate caramel truffles

And now I'm wanting chocolate. Thanks, ladies!
