Allie's Sex Drive Explained - #CharacterInterview BONUS sneak peak at Requiem, Halos #2 by @KeriLake!!!

Hey! Thanks for stopping in. I'm uber excited to share with you my interview with Allie, the MC of Somnium, a kick @$$ paranormal romance by the awesome Keri Lake.  Join us & I'll pour you a glass of delish red vino.

I walk into Dooley’s a little before eight. The bar is bustling, dim and loud. I ignore the crowd and make my way to an empty booth beyond the pool tables in the back corner.

Choosing to face the door, I slide on the wooden bench and glance around the room. A handful of middle-aged men ogle the young women scantily clad in come-hither clothing. A couple of college punks are playing pool, gulping beer and slapping backs. A group of ladies my age, doubtless on a girls’ night out, lift glasses of mixed drinks, their laughter loud and abandoned.

One of the waitresses swings by and asks what I want to drink. I order two glass of Merlot, hoping Allie doesn’t mind.

A woman at least ten years younger than me walks through the entrance at precisely eight o’clock. Odd eyes the color of butterscotch land on me and a smile lights her face. She’s beautiful, with long auburn-brown locks brushing against a comfy-looking blue sweater that clings just enough to garner a man’s gaze.

Weaving through the crowd, she draws more than one appreciative stare from the older and younger guys alike.

“Allie?” I ask, standing to shake her hand. “I’m Terri. Thanks so much or agreeing to meet with me.”

“No problem.”

She sits across from me, and I pull out a small notepad from my purse. Favorite Bic pen poised I dive in as she swirls the wine.  “So. You’re an engineer, working for the military. A bit intimidating. How do you deal with all the male attention? Love it? Hate it?”

“I know a lot of women would probably consider it a dreamboat career to work with a bunch of men all day long – but it comes with some challenges.”  She takes a sip of her Merlot.  “The labor pack on the Portsmouth job is cool – even Snark has his moments.  But man, what I wouldn’t give for a little girl-talk every once in a while!”

I smile. “Well, then, let’s get to it! Where does your male-like sex drive come from? Seriously. Your obsession with Colton is … well obsessive. You remind me of a male polar bear I saw on Animal Planet following his mate around, food and sleep disregarded in hopes of capturing her eye.”

Allie blushes. “Can I just tell you, there is something about him that I cannot explain!  Obviously, I’ve been around men…a lot.  But when I’m near him, it’s like my brain gets scrambled.  I actually FEEL something when we touch.” She leans forward, voice lowering. “Seriously, it’s like this impulse that moves through my body.  My mom always told me that sparks would fly when I met the right guy.  I didn’t think she meant that so literally!”

“Maybe it’s because he’s an angel – or whatever he is. Anyway, knowing your guardian angel has got to rock. Having been rescued from death on more than one occasion, you must be tempted to do all those things you never would have considered before. Sky diving? Splunking? Both would scare the crap outta me!”

Laughter bubbles. “Well, my angel’s made it clear to me that he’s not supposed to be saving my life.  And, well, you know, a lot of my life-threatening situations are based on my own stupidity, usually.  I’m not sure I would willingly jump out of an airplane and skydive.  In my case, I’d probably accidentally fall out of one.”

“Speaking of His Hotness, doesn’t the fact that he’s not human bother you? Cause fear in any way?”

“It made me a little nervous at first.” Allie takes another sip, her face thoughtful. “But it goes back to what I was saying before.  When I’m around him, there is this inexplicable calm.  You know, like when you’ve known the person forever.  I just had a sense he wouldn’t hurt me.  I guess my willingness to give others the benefit of doubt extends to non-human species too.”

I realize I haven’t written a single thing on my notepad. I push it away and swig my Merlot. “Non-human species and hot. Like Drew.”

She nods.

“Dark, brooding, beautiful Drew.” I down the last of my wine and lean on the table, chin in hand. “Any insight on why he is so … all over the place emotion-wise? His personality, or lack thereof, would have made me snap. Why didn’t you?”

Perfectly groomed brows furrow. “Drew is another case.  He had this way of drawing women in, charming them, in spite of all that brooding stuff.  Of course, now I totally get why, which explains pretty much everything.  To be honest, I felt the need to tread carefully with Drew.  I wasn’t interested in being walked on by the guy but at the same time, something inside of me told me that I better not ruffle his feathers, no matter how pretty they were.”

“Feathers.” I snicker. “Good one.”

She laughs and movement by the door draws my attention.

A sun-kissed Greek god walks in, broad shoulders barely clearing the door frame. Flawless complexion and chiseled jaw – just like I like them. Black hair buzzed in a military crew cut sets off sea-blue eyes that shimmer as he scans the bar.

“Good Lord have mercy,” I breathe. “Would you look at that.”

Allie glances over her shoulder. “Colton.”

His gaze lands on Allie and he arcs a brow.

A gasped ‘Oh’ escapes her lips. Leaping to her feet, she drops enough money on the table for her wine and a small tip. “Gotta go!”

“Well it was nice to meet you,” I say although she’s already halfway across the bar. Couldn’t blame her. If a man looked at me like that I’d run without a backward glance too.

I sigh and raise my glass toward the waitress.

And now for a sneak peak at Requiem (Halos #2)!!!!!!

The stench of burning flesh seeped into Zavriel’s nose and watered his eyes.  Air, thick with ash, forced a cough out of him.  Everywhere he looked, death lay in charred reminders of the mere hours that would’ve saved lives had they arrived sooner.

His paces slowed upon reaching the center of the village where soldiers lined either side of the path.  He examined their expressions - something akin to disturbance and awe.

The distinct cry of an infant reached his ears.

Zavriel took quick but cautious steps toward a blazing pyre in what would’ve been the village square.  The cries came from the other side of the flame.  His head snapped back and forth.  “You would watch this child burn?”

Eyes of the surrounding soldiers diverted away.  Not a word spoken.

Zavriel removed his gauntlets, threw them to the ground, and reached through the flames, blindly grasping for what he feared to find.  The metal plates of armor instantly warmed through his wool tunic and the heat licked his face.  Smooth skin met his fingertips while his hands searched then slipped beneath the tiny bundle.  His heart leapt into his throat as he passed an infant child through the curtain of fire.

Completely naked and unaffected by the burn, her skin, white as the new snow, bared not a single mark from the blaze.

Perfectly intact.

Eyes, an odd amber like the flames from whence she came, stared up at him.

The baby silenced in Zavriel’s arms.

“Half-breed?”  Donthel asked from behind.

“Her skin would have scorched,” – Zavriel’s voice mirrored the disbelief in his thoughts – “and yet, it is smooth as woven silk.”  His calloused fingertips brushed gently against the baby’s arm.  Goosebumps formed on her skin and she suckled her fingers.

“She is not our kind, Zavriel.”  Donthel’s grip curled tight around Zavriel’s arm.  “Leave her, your Grace.  I fear this is an omen.”

Zavriel’s eyes scanned the surrounding men.

Their faces, with curled lips and furrowed brows, revealed contempt in spite of their silence.

Adrenaline coursed through his body, but his breathing remained steady.  Unmoved.  A sudden desire to protect the baby bloomed inside of him.

Muscles tense, Zavriel’s gaze settled back upon Donthel.  “Your fears are rooted in silly mythology, my most trusted confidant.”  Zavriel jerked his arm free from Donthel’s grasp, eyes locked and challenging, then looked down at the infant child who’d fallen asleep in the crook of his elbow, still suckling her fingers.  He wrapped part of his black cape across his breastplate and part around the baby then pulled her into his chest.  “Bring me something proper to wrap this child.”

Ok. I don't know about YOU, but I cannot wait for this book to come out!!! Grrrrrrrrrr. Watcha think? Gunna nab it? Beg to beta read? I think I just might have to do that ....

#BookReview : Somnium (Halos #1)

Paranormal Romance
4.5 Stars

A work assignment in Kittery, Maine should be routine for Allie Lynch; nothing more than to prove herself as a brilliant engineer. Instead she finds herself torn between two men: a gorgeous military guard, Colton Briggs, and her devilishly handsome colleague, Drew Costa. To resist temptation, Allie does the only thing she can: she throws herself into her work.

But fate has other plans for Allie. Women are going missing all around her, Allie is struck with a series of life-threatening mishaps, and she becomes the obsession of a local deranged psychopath.
Thrust into a dark world that she can hardly fathom, Allie must fight for her very survival, open her mind to new realities – and open her heart to the possibility of love. Because both of these men are trouble – but one is a greater danger than she could ever imagine ...

My Review:

Couldn't wait to get this book in the mail from Amazon, but they took 3 - THREE - weeks to get it to me. That's a whole different story, though.

I loved this book from the very beginning. Ms. Lake took her time setting the stage: Dark, rainy, ominous. I knew heavy, bad things lay ahead. While some might complain of this making for a slow start, it hooked me with a capital 'H'. I couldn't wait to find out what happened on the next page. And the next. And the next. Could NOT put this book down!

Yummies:  This whole book was yummy. Setting, characters, plot, secrets, hotties, palatable fear - quite a list, huh???

Yuckies:  Allie is a bundle of raging hormones, a smidge over-the-top IMO. I've never read a book with a female so intent upon getting what she wants from the man she's desperate for.  Did it take away from the book? Not really. Just a surprising element for me.
Recommend: Need you ask? I enjoyed this so much that I begged the MC, Allie, to sit down with me. I had a few things I wanted to know.

On Thursday I'll be posting my interview with her so be sure to stop by!

Nab a copy of Somnium!

#BookReview : Tidal Whispers

Paranormal / Fantasy Anthology
Overall rating 4.5 Stars

Heart's Desire by Julie Reece  4.5 Stars

This short story is very moving - loneliness, loss, & love. Ms. Reece portrays them beautifully - brings them alive - so we can experience them with Tessa, the MC.

I don't know about you, but I've always had a dream world I escaped to. A few actually.  Tessa wakes from her favorite one to a gut wrenching reality that easily gained my empathy. I longed for her to re-find Cam, just knowing he would ease her heartache. And *spoiler alert!* he does.

Warm fuzzies, folks.

The Sweetest Song by Claire Gillian  4 Stars

I loved Disney's The Little Mermaid, and this story reminded me of it.  A voice lost, a love found, The Sweetest Song was just that - sweet.

Otis, the male interest in this story was precious. A great character, fleshed out & believable for so short a story. He heads to his doom for love which any fairy tale / fantasy needs IMO. The 'happily ever after' comes about by two gods, Poseidon and Aphrodite, who act like a couple of modern childish brats. That threw me a smidge. I always imagined the gods to be prim & proper - ancient, lofty, condescending beings.

Overall, a great little story I enjoyed submerging myself in.

Pearl of Pau'maa by Kelly Said  4 Stars

While the whole anthology is fantasy in some way, Ms. Said is by far the most imaginative IMO. While all the stories are of love, this one has that magical element attached - a pearl - which brings the two characters together in dark, watery depths.

I had one major issue with this lovely story, though. Although fantasy, all stories still need that believability factor. One scene lacked that for me. Harmon, the male interest, rescues the lovely lady, Miki, from drowning. Moments later he leaves her treading water to dive down & retrieve her lobster trap. While down there he holds a long conversation w/ his brother, another merman, giving no thought to the weakened woman the pearl led him to. I just felt he'd be anxious to leave her side, or should have taken her to shore first seeing as how she doesn't have a tail, but two human legs. Dunno. Could just be me.

A wonderful little story, though, one NOT to be skipped.

The Undergarden by Jocelyn Adams  5 Stars

This was by far my favorite story in the anthology. Ms. Adams drew me in and hooked my empathy from the get-go. She created two characters whose story affected me long after I finished reading. LOVE that.

Rarely do stories brim my eyes with unshed tears, but this one did. More than once. I felt Nixie's loneliness, enjoyed her innocence which was portrayed beautifully and consistently.  Her journey through life is touching - heart aching, yet warming. Surprisingly, it didn't feel rushed in the least bit.

This story, while fantasy like the rest, far outshone them with that magical feel - that dream-like quality that moved my emotions.

So do I recommend this anthology? Without a doubt. Add it to your Goodreads list HERE. Purchase your copy from Amazon or Barnes & Nobel.  You'll thank me later!!

After her parents and sister are abducted by the Enforcers, seventeen-year-old Adele, a member of the middle-class moon dwellers, is unjustly sentenced to life in prison for her parents' crimes of treason.
Against all odds, Adele must escape from the Pen and find her family, while being hunted by a deranged, killing machine named Rivet, who works for the President. She is helped by two other inmates, Tawni and Cole, each of whom have dark secrets that are better left undiscovered.  At the other end of the social spectrum is Tristan, the son of the President and a sun dweller. His mother is gone. He hates his father. Backed by only his servant and best friend, Roc, he leaves his lavish lifestyle in the Sun Realm, seeking to make something good out of his troubled life. When a war breaks out within the Tri-Realms, Tristan is thrust into the middle of a conflict that seems to mysteriously follow Adele as she seeks to find her family and uncover her parents true past.

#writetip of the week:

While complaining / discussing the pros & cons of networking this week, a fellow forumite had this to say,

"Using twitter isn't required to be successful in *any* business. Neither is blogging. The best way to sell books is to write them, and write them well."

Thank you, says I, for refocusing my wandering - networking - mind on what's important. Time for me to pick back up my old fashioned pencil & get to work red pen & get back to editing - my favorite thing to complain about. hehehe

That is all.  Happy writing!!!

Book Review: The Third Scroll

A fantasy novel
4.5 Stars

Sold into slavery, Tera, a budding healer is thrust into the savage realm of barbarian warlords, the same realm which claimed her mother years ago. She must avoid the displeasure of her warrior lord and survive the cruelties of the concubines, even as war threatens on the horizon.

Yet a greater danger looms when she catches the eye of the most powerful lord of the land and he takes her for his Pleasure Hall. Tera struggles to escape, while searching for the secret behind her mother's death. But what she discovers challenges everything she believes in. A path set long ago beckons. A path that could lead to triumph, or the destruction of her world.

My Review:

This is by far one of the best epic fantasy novels I've read in some time. I was immersed in Tera's world from the first chapter and compelled to click my kindle's page turner late into the night.

Yummies:  Cliche-less awesome story telling wraps around real life characters who lack in perfection. Rarely am I surprised by character revelations and spilled secrets, but this story had quite a few I didn't see coming. I was thrilled, to say the least!

Yuckies:  Not really a yucky - more a personal preference which some fantasy lovers would disagree with ... I'm a sucker for romance and the fulfillment of love being shown. Just when I thought, "Woo Hoo! THE scene,' blinds closed, curtains were drawn. Pooh.   :)

Recommend: You better believe it. Add it to your GR list HERE, or find it on Amazon HERE. You'll be thanking me that you did!

Call of the Sea #BlogTour Meet smokin' HOT Daniel O'Rourke

Welcome to today's stop in the Call of the Sea Blog Tour. I'm excited to share with you my review for Rebecca Hart's debut release due out June 21st AND a character interview with the smokin' hot Daniel O'Rourke!

From Goodreads:

Elysandra Winters has always yearned for a life of adventure on the rolling seas and is willing to do whatever it takes to fulfill her dream. When her Privateer father continually refuses to allow his only daughter to sail, Ellie defies him, disguises herself as a boy, and goes in search of a captain who will give her a chance to prove her worth.

Thanks to the cursed selkie blood coursing through his veins, Daniel O'Rourke needs the sea to survive. After giving up on his humanity and spending three years in seal form, he decides to give his human side another chance. Daniel goes in search of a job and a sense of normalcy, earning himself a position aboard Captain Winter’s ship, The Siren's Call. However, his new captain’s first assignment has nothing at all to do with sailing, and everything to do with his headstrong young daughter.

Years later, when the leader of a band of bloodthirsty pirates murders Captain Winters, Daniel and Elysandra’s lives come crashing back together with the force of a hurricane. Both experts in deception, they must find a way to trust each other if they are to have any hope of hunting down the captain’s killer.

 My Review:

What a pleasure to read this without a week or so between chapters! Yes, I was blessed to be an early beta reader. I saw CotS in the rough. Not that it was really rough to begin with - unpolished if you will. ;)

Yummies: I thought I was caught up in the story before! The simplicity of Ms. Hart's writing makes for a super rich but easy read. No paragraph upon paragraph of exposition. Pure writing at its best - character, tension, & action. So, so good.
And what characters they are! Ellie is a short-tempered, stubborn young woman intent upon sailing the ocean.
Daniel (my Danny Boy) is a selkie and has loved Ellie since first seeing her as a young girl.
Both are so real - so flawed - so human-like that I felt their emotions, highs & lows.

This debut novel is one of those that you dread noticing the remaining pages ebb away. You CAN NOT put it down, yet the desire to do so and make it last longer is almost too much to bear.

Yuckies: There aren't any. Period.

Recommend: Abso-freakin'-lutely. Even if pirates, intrigue, and the high seas aren't your thing, you'll fall in love with this story - its characters kick @$$.

Speaking of which ...

I decided to sneak into the time machine hidden by the government here in an underground bunker in NH's boondocks. I needed to meet Danny Boy. I threw a letter through first telling them who I was, what I wanted, and where to meet me then stepped through ….

Electricity shot through my body. Every nerve tingling, I opened my eyes. I stood on a windswept bluff, a secluded cove with racing white crests below me. Sand trickled around my flip flops. The scent of the sea and salt filled my nose.

A scuffle sounded on the path behind me and I spun.

Danny. Oh boy, oh boy.

Chestnut locks glinting in the setting sun topped an angular face. He brushed a fringe from his eyes, muscled arm straining against a linen shirt.

Can we say butterflies? I hadn’t been that tongue-tied since high school.

He strode toward me, firm lips curling into a warm smile.  Chocolate eyes twinkled beneath an arched brow. “Mrs. Rochenski?”

“T-Terri. Please.” I extended my hand.

Oh, the warmth of his work-worn palm. Delish tingles crept up my arm. It was easy to see why Ellie couldn’t resist him.

“Daniel.” His gaze took in my jean capris and tank top. He didn’t flinch, but he wouldn’t. Ellie always dressed in breeches.

“I … uh … don’t have a lot of time. Mind if we sit by this scarred tree?” I asked.

Daniel gestured for me to lead the way.

I sat cross-legged in the sand and pulled a small notepad and pencil from my back pocket as he lounged on the ground beside me.

Trying not to stare, I cleared my throat. “So. Danny Boy.” My face flamed at the slip. “Um … may I call you that?”

“As long as you don’t call me Skipper, we’re good.” He winked.

Lord have mercy. I relaxed my grip on the pencil before it snapped. “Would you mind telling us a little about yourself?”

“I’ve never been one to talk about myself, but I grew up in Youghal, Ireland until my father kicked me out when my mother passed away. He and I never really got on well, and when Ma passed, well, things went from tense to impossible. Of course, if he hadn’t been the man he was, I’d never have left home, worked for Captain Winters, or met Ellie. She can be rather frustrating, but I can’t imagine my life without her.”
Lucky girl. “Your mother passed a very unique gene to you.”
He nodded.
“What exactly is a selkie?”
“That’s a good question. Basically, a selkie is a shapeshifter with a seal form and a human one. Selkies, however, don’t have full control over when they change their form. Each year, I have to take seal form at leas,t one complete lunar cycle per year or risk illness and in the case of my beautiful selkie mother, death.”
I scribbled his words onto paper as the sounds of the surf swept up the cliff on a brisk wind. I pushed back a strand of whipping hair. “So in those lunar cycles, ever run across a mermaid who made you forget about Ellie—even just briefly?”
“How could anyone forget about Ellie? I’ve never known anyone more sure of who she is or what she wants. I find that distractingly sexy, don’t you?”
I wanted to say, “I think you’re sexy” but I didn’t think Ellie would appreciate it much. I decided to ignore his question. “Are human girls really worth it?”
“So far I have no complaints.” A chuckle rumbled in his broad chest. “Of course, I’ve not been married long… Can I get back to you on that one?”
“Ah, marriage—the perfect institute to thoroughly get to know someone. It may not have been long since your marriage, but you’ve known Ellie since she was a child. Can you offer some advice on dealing with a hot tempered woman?”
“I was kind of hoping you might give me some.” Laughter barked past his grin. “I’ve always been a rather calm personality. It takes a lot for me to lose my temper, so that helps. Patience, too. That’s a big one.” He shrugged sculpted shoulders. “I’m still learning.”
Drool stormed my mouth. If only he lived in the 21st century and wasn’t a selkie …. “If you could be completely human, would you give up the selkie part of your life?”
“If you’d asked me that before I’d met Ellie, I’d have said yes in a flash. Then, all I wanted was to fit in, to belong. But now, having a child on the way and a woman who accepts and loves me for who I truly am… who would trade that away? No, I’m happy with who I am,” tan hands lifted to make air quotes, "‘selkie curse’ and all.”
A smile lifted my lips. “Why that’s one of the sweetest—”
My eyes clenched shut as electric shock waves once more lit my body like a torch. I swallowed back nausea and lifted tingling lids. Florescent lights threw the bunker in shadows. An alarm shrieked in my ears.
Damn.
