Fall Movie you’re most looking forward to? –OMG! Crimson Peak and Mad Max:Fury Road

Born in Ohio, I lived next to my grandfather’s horse farm until the fourth grade. Summers were about riding, fishing and make-believe, while winter brought sledding and ice-skating on frozen ponds. Most of life was magical, but not all.

I struggled with multiple learning disabilities, did not excel in school. I spent much of my time looking out windows and daydreaming. In the fourth grade (with the help of one very nice teacher) I fought dyslexia for my right to read, like a prince fights a dragon in order to free the princess locked in a tower, and I won.

Afterwards, I read like a fiend. I invented stories where I could be the princess… or a gifted heroine from another world who kicked bad guy butt to win the heart of a charismatic hero. Who wouldn’t want to be a part of that? Later, I moved to Florida where I continued to fantasize about superpowers and monsters, fabricating stories (my mother called it lying) and sharing them with my friends.

Then I thought I’d write one down…

Hooked, I’ve been writing ever since. I write historical, contemporary, urban fantasy, adventure, and young adult romances. I love strong heroines, sweeping tales of mystery and epic adventure… which must include a really hot guy. My writing is proof you can work hard to overcome any obstacle. Don’t give up. I say, if you write, write on!

Excerpt:

A tall, blond, handsome-for-an-older-man guy, rushes toward me on the already crowded sidewalk, hauling an enormous black suitcase.

He plows ahead as though he doesn’t see me, clearly on a mission to get somewhere—fast. In his haste, he knocks my shoulder.

“Easy!” I say, rubbing my throbbing muscle through my coat sleeve. “Just minding own business and I get plowed into by a—" Familiarity hits me just as hard.

“Find the One. Give it away,” he calls out.

My eyebrows rise as a memory clicks in place. Oh, my gosh! Jeff Branner? My eighth grade science teacher? I do a double take. Can’t be him, can it? He’s way too tall.

“Fortune means nothing. This time we must not fail.”

Fortune? I like money.

A man with gray hair in a three-piece suit keeps pace behind the ‘Jeff’ guy. So do three young guys wearing army jackets, an old, Hispanic lady with a fox stole around her neck, and a mom pushing a sleeping kid in a fancy stroller. I’m not normally the groupie type but his money comment, along with his trail of disciples has me more than intrigued.

Hesitation grips me. The clock on the bank across the street reads, eleven-forty-three. The nice folks from St. Andrew’s Mission hand out food to street people at noon on Sundays. Their chili does a good imitation of runny dog chow, but I haven’t eaten for two days.

Yet the guy’s pull on me is irresistible. I turn toward him, conflicting ideas warring in my brain. Giveaways only happen on game shows and in the movies. That can’t be it, I reason. He could be some homicidal maniac with me his next victim.

Curiosity gives me a final shove. I abandon ideas of chili and jog to catch up with the others.
The young brunette pushing the stroller scowls at me over her shoulder.

‘Jeff’ surges ahead like a locomotive. We trail him, and his suitcase, three blocks before venturing down a side alley, away from the larger crowds.

He finally stops at a set of stone stairs, peers up and down the alley, empty aside from our little group. An iron gate wrapped in chains and padlocks seals entry to gothic oak doors at the top step. Ruby glass adorns both inner panels. The craftsmanship indicates wealth, but the building appears long abandoned.

Why is he stopping here?

The stench of urine permeates the surrounding concrete, suggesting homeless sleep in the alcove at night. The smell insults the pretty scene, but what can be done? This is Atlanta.

Jeff faces us, sweeps his dirty-blond hair back from his forehead. A five o’clock shadow darkens his jaw, while an expensive, taupe, trench coat envelops his body down to his calves. His face contorts as if in pain. If I had my sketchbook I would draw him and try to capture the exquisite expression of torture on his face.

“I’ve failed in my duty, ruined my life with pride and greed.” Despite his faded accent, he speaks in a clear voice. He rubs his hand over the back of his neck. “I’ve had everything, every pleasure money can buy. It wasn’t enough. I wanted the world.”

Don’t we all?

My Review: 4.5 Stars

Birdie lives on the streets, and a run-in with a wacko leaves her with more than she ever had - and an amulet that takes her on acid trip-like 'journies'. What she sees, however, are secret hints of what she'll need to lift an ancient viking curse. But she won't go it alone.

Enter Grey Matthews, her Guardian.

Let me just say if I was an 18-yr-old, I'd have a major crush. Hot, rich, and amazingly taleneted, he's all Birdie thought she'd never have.

Anyhoo. Read the book for the rest.  :)

Yummies:  Who doesn't love a snarky, strong female character? Especially one who has baggage - emotions held behind protective walls just begging to be pulled down? Enter that boy again - one who, while just seeming to have it all, has issues & pain of his own. Both are well rounded, flawed, & likeable. It was easy getting caught up in their stories.

The plot itself was totally unique for me. I LOVE finding a book unlike anything I've read before.

Tension & pacing was excellent - no info dumps & long history lessons. Just straight up story - action, adventure, & NO love triangle. Woo Hoo!

Yuckies:  A huge fan and writer of fantasy, I MUST call attention to the magical elements of this story. While some may argue, 'It's fantasy, anything is possible!' I disagree.

I NEED the believability factor.  I need to be convinced that what I'm reading could really happen. Logically it must make sense. Thus my 2 issues.

1 - The first time Birdie uses the amulet, it's effortless. Untried, unpracticed, having never attempted it before, the magic just happens. If it had been made clear it was the amulet itself doing everything & only using her as the conduit, fine. But that's not what happened. She controls the wind with ease and in the middle of it (in a conversational tone) asks Grey for his help. No panic. No weakness - like controlling elements is a cinch. Granted, later she struggles with the other elements, but the intial ease really bothered me. (Sorry Julie.)

2 - Lack of consequence. Normally magic draws from something, a 'taking' if you will. Here however, there is nothing. The amulet's magic is free. No consequences whatsoever. This really left a bad taste in my mouth, especially in the end when she & Grey are left with the amulet's power becoming a part of their physical beings. Two teenage supermen with no kryptonite ...??? While they're both great kids, what's to hold them in check? Balance the good & evil intent untold powers can bring?

Recommend:  Looking above it seems there more yuck than yum, but that isn't true. I just like to ramble on the fantasy aspects of fantasy.  ;)

Read this book? ABSOLUTELY! It took me 3 days (thank you daughters, traveling, cleaning - life in general) but my mind was never far from Birdie & Grey. They had my attention, my desire to see them through to the end, and for me that's what makes this a book great.

On to the interview ....

Q. What is up with the yellow eye?? (For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, check out Ms. Reece's blog.)

Ah, the eye belongs to Carlotta. The heroine from a YA paranormal historical romance (what a mouthful) I’m working on. I actually wrote it before Crux, but it needs more work. It is my favorite story I’ve produced so far and would love to see it published one day.

Q. How did you celebrate when you got signed for your debut novel, Crux?

After I jumped around like a lunatic for a while, my husband took me to dinner … then we made out in the parking lot. That counts as celebratory, right? ;)

Q. In a perfect Julie’s World, where and when would you write?

Okay, don’t roll your eyes. It’s going to sound nutty, but I’d like a little cottage that looks like something from a Harry Potter movie—all wood and stone and stained glass (and off kilter, just a tad) at the edge of a wood by a lake. I’d put a desk on the back (glassed in) porch facing the water and dream and write from 8 to 6 every day until my husband came home. You said a perfect world so I dreamt big!

Q. Authors that have influenced your writing?

When I was a kid I read the classics. Austen, Bronte, Dickens, Hardy, Webb, these influences are easier to see in my historical works. My beta readers and critique partners tell me when to ‘real it in’, so to speak. LOL. Then I jumped to Michael Crichton, James Clavell, J. R. R. Tolkien and Colleen McCollough. There are so many talented YA authors now, it’s tough to choose, but lately, I love J.K. Rowling, Suzanne Collins, Veronica Roth, well … you get the idea. Can I also just say I was highly influenced by reading comic books? Thor and Conan were my favorites, but I loved them all and wanted to be Poison Ivy soooo bad!

Q. Would you mind sharing a bit about how you overcame dyslexia?

Mm. That was tough. I came through school during a time no one understood. You were labeled smart, average or, let’s face it, not so smart. I even had teachers that were cruel to me over my struggle, but there was this one … She put head phones on me so I could read along with the narrator of a book. What that did was give me love of, great, well told stories. That love drove me to want to read on my own, just me and the adventure. I worked very hard over the next few years. My disabilities are still with me. Don’t ask me for directions or to dial an old fashioned phone. Ha! But the passion I have for devouring books was worth every minute of work I put in.

Q. And finally … dark or milk chocolate?

Dark all the way, baby! Well, I take that back. I tried 90% dark and couldn’t hack it, but up to say, 70% and I’m smiling.

Heart's Desire by Julie Reece  4.5 Stars

This short story is very moving - loneliness, loss, & love. Ms. Reece portrays them beautifully - brings them alive - so we can experience them with Tessa, the MC.

I don't know about you, but I've always had a dream world I escaped to. A few actually.  Tessa wakes from her favorite one to a gut wrenching reality that easily gained my empathy. I longed for her to re-find Cam, just knowing he would ease her heartache. And *spoiler alert!* he does.

Warm fuzzies, folks.

The Sweetest Song by Claire Gillian  4 Stars

I loved Disney's The Little Mermaid, and this story reminded me of it.  A voice lost, a love found, The Sweetest Song was just that - sweet.

Otis, the male interest in this story was precious. A great character, fleshed out & believable for so short a story. He heads to his doom for love which any fairy tale / fantasy needs IMO. The 'happily ever after' comes about by two gods, Poseidon and Aphrodite, who act like a couple of modern childish brats. That threw me a smidge. I always imagined the gods to be prim & proper - ancient, lofty, condescending beings.

Overall, a great little story I enjoyed submerging myself in.



Pearl of Pau'maa by Kelly Said  4 Stars

While the whole anthology is fantasy in some way, Ms. Said is by far the most imaginative IMO. While all the stories are of love, this one has that magical element attached - a pearl - which brings the two characters together in dark, watery depths.

I had one major issue with this lovely story, though. Although fantasy, all stories still need that believability factor. One scene lacked that for me. Harmon, the male interest, rescues the lovely lady, Miki, from drowning. Moments later he leaves her treading water to dive down & retrieve her lobster trap. While down there he holds a long conversation w/ his brother, another merman, giving no thought to the weakened woman the pearl led him to. I just felt he'd be anxious to leave her side, or should have taken her to shore first seeing as how she doesn't have a tail, but two human legs. Dunno. Could just be me.

A wonderful little story, though, one NOT to be skipped.

The Undergarden by Jocelyn Adams  5 Stars

This was by far my favorite story in the anthology. Ms. Adams drew me in and hooked my empathy from the get-go. She created two characters whose story affected me long after I finished reading. LOVE that.

Rarely do stories brim my eyes with unshed tears, but this one did. More than once. I felt Nixie's loneliness, enjoyed her innocence which was portrayed beautifully and consistently.  Her journey through life is touching - heart aching, yet warming. Surprisingly, it didn't feel rushed in the least bit.

This story, while fantasy like the rest, far outshone them with that magical feel - that dream-like quality that moved my emotions.

So do I recommend this anthology? Without a doubt. Add it to your Goodreads list HERE. Purchase your copy from Amazon or Barnes & Nobel.  You'll thank me later!!
